New Obsession

Lately I have become obsessed with the idea of making a quilt. I find myself researching quilt information, when I should be doing my reading and papers for school. This is not good. Now before you get to impressed I want to make a baby quilt for one of my friends who is having a baby in a few months. However, I find myself completely overwhelmed by all of this quilting vocab "batting" "binding" "machine quilting" "walking foot" "quilting fabric" (I Thought fabric was fabric, what the freak) and the list goes on. I have been searching the web for tuturials and definitions to the endless amount of knowledge that it appears you have to have to make a quilt.

This is the quilt I am considering making. Mostly because it has the most clear directions and I feel like it is doable based on her step by step instructions.

I feel like it really shouldn't be this difficult. It seems like every time I turn around people are making quilts, so internet world, I need help. Can someone please offer me a word of advice or have a good resource for teaching yourself how to quilt.

Thank you.

  2. I made my first quilt from start to finish for zoey a couple years ago and I say a crib sized quilt, or baby quilt is for sure the way to start. Plus they are small enough to quilt on a home machine. I love Denyse Schmidt's quilts. (http://www.dsquilts.com/) They look complicated, but they are really simple...well, I am sure some are complicated, but she has a a lot of really simple ones. Have fun making one!
