Rainy Days

It has been raining here a lot lately.  I know we are supposed to expect April showers so that they will bring us May flowers but it has been raining since March, and there is not a song about that.

So today I thought that I would share with you some of things that I have learned about how to cope with rainy days in the city.  Especially important when you don't drive and you walk everywhere, and I mean everywhere.

1. Definitely don't forget to check the weather in the morning which leads you to forget to bring your umbrella and you don't wear your rain boots to work because it wasn't currently raining during the 10 minutes it takes you to walk to work.  And since it is always overcast in this fair city you don't think much about the weather, since you are probably already late for work.

2. Do be vigilantly on the lookout for puddles that may have accumulated on the street near the sidewalk.  Getting splashed by a wave of water from a puddle does not just occur in movies.
This exact puddle has soaked my lower half once before and I have learned my lesson about passively walking when it is raining.  This puddle is the puddle of death.  It is always there if it is raining and with its length and depth it has the ability to shower the innocent walker with a wave of water.  The puddles dangers are increased because of the subway stop (thats the thing currently covered in plywood getting "fixed" ) right next to it so you have to get close to the puddle.  The key with puddles like this is to walk fast, real fast.

3. Also be sure to keep a safe distance from the curb when waiting to cross the street.  This area is another dangerous place where water accumulates and can leave you soaked up to the knees.

4. Make sure you own more that one umbrella because yours will not last long with the gale force winds that always seem to accompany rain in this great city and it will probably rain again before you have had time to buy a new one.  I have broken at least 5 umbrellas in the almost 2 years that we have lived here, apparently I don't know proper umbrella techniques.  My current umbrella is slightly broken but still working so we shall see how long it lasts.
